‘Back to Basics’: Shibani Kashyap on Her Soulful Retreat with Swami Ramdev

Powerhouse performer Shibani Kashyap talks to Priyanjana Nandi about how spirituality shaped her creative side.

Shibani Kashyap’s voice first resonated across the nation through the iconic tune of AIR-FM and jingles for brands like Amul. Once dubbed the “Jingle Queen,” she has since evolved into one of India’s most versatile singers, seamlessly blending pop with Sufi-western fusion.

Her experience attending Baba Ramdev’s spiritual programme offers valuable insight for artistes seeking to integrate spirituality into their creative journeys. In a candid conversation, Shibani shares how yoga and holistic well-being have played a transformative role in her life and artistry.

Excerpts from the interview…

What is the primary genre of songs for which you have gained popularity?

I’m best known for my soulful romantic songs; melodies that touch the heart and linger. Tracks like ‘Sajna Aa Bhi Jaa’, ‘Ho Gayi Hai Mohabbat’, ‘Jogiya’, ‘Kya Nazakat Hai’ and more recently ‘Heer Hai Royi’, have all resonated deeply with listeners and helped define my musical identity.

Starting with writing jingles to venturing into fusion music, how do you see your music journey?

My journey as a musician has been incredibly organic, like a book where each chapter unfolds with its own surprises and steady growth. From crafting jingles to exploring fusion music, every phase has added depth and dimension to my evolution as an artiste.

You mentioned that spirituality has helped you gain a positive outlook on life. Can you elaborate on that?

Spirituality has played a significant role in my life. It has made me more confident, positive, and deeply connected to my inner self. It’s also had a profound impact on my music. I began composing with a strong Sufi influence, both in terms of lyrical depth and musical intensity. Songs like ‘Nagmagee’, ‘Sajna’, and ‘Zinda Hoon Main’ reflect that soulful, spiritual flavour that now defines.

You visited a spiritual programme recently. Could you tell us more about it?

‘Back To Basics’ is a beautiful new show on Sony TV that I’m proud to be a part of. We shot it in the serene surroundings of Uttarakhand, at Swami Ramdev’s Niramayam Ashram. It was an incredibly enriching experience; rooted in nature, wellness, and self-discovery.

During my time there, I underwent traditional Ayurvedic treatments, practiced yoga under the guidance of Swami Ramdev himself, and engaged in deep meditation.

Our days began with early morning yoga sessions at sunrise, followed by nature walks, philosophical discussions, and wholesome satvik meals. The entire experience was rejuvenating, refreshing, and deeply introspective. I returned feeling renewed and a more balanced and evolved version of myself.

Has this also helped in your voice modulation, along with your spiritual journey?

Absolutely! The pranayama practices and special breathing techniques that Swami Ramdev taught me have significantly enhanced my voice and voice modulation. Exercises like Ujjayi, Kapalbhati, and Anulom Vilom are incredibly effective, not just for vocal strength and control, but also for overall respiratory health. Yoga and pranayama help release toxins from the body, which in turn promotes a more positive mindset and emotional balance. It’s a holistic practice that benefits both the voice and the soul.

What would you say are the benefits of yoga for people who are creative like you?

Yoga nurtures the mind, body, and soul in a truly holistic way, something that’s incredibly valuable for creative individuals. It brings clarity of thought, emotional balance, and physical stamina. As I mentioned earlier, specific breathing exercises like Ujjayi and Anulom Vilom are magical for vocal control and modulation, making yoga especially beneficial for singers and performers.

Would you say this retreat has helped you grow as a singer? Do you believe there’s a connection between spirituality and music?

Absolutely. This retreat has been transformative for me, both as a singer and as a person. It helped me discover a new voice, one that is more grounded, calm, and creatively awakened. As a student of yoga and spirituality, I feel more in tune with myself and my art. ‘Back To Basics’ truly felt like a return to my roots. It reminded me that creativity flows best when the mind is still and the spirit is aligned. The connection between music and spirituality is very real and incredibly powerful.
