How to Protect Your Skin During the Rainy Season

Cosmetologist Dr Mahnaz Jahan Begum details how men and women should adjust their skincare routine this monsoon.

As the monsoon rolls in, your skin has to grapple with a new set of challenges — humidity spikes, fungal infections, breakouts, and that all-too￾familiar mid-season dullness. This seasonal shift demands more than just an umbrella; it calls for a refreshed skincare routine tailored to the monsoon’s unique demands.

When the first nip of cool monsoon air arrives, many of us tend to let our summer skincare guard down. But while summer can be brutal on the skin and hair, the rains bring their fair share of trouble. Common skin issues for men and women during the monsoon include acne, skin eruptions and allergic reactions, ranging from swelling to raw, inflamed skin. For those with sensitive skin, this seasonal transition, coupled with constant dampness and rising humidity, can trigger irritation and inflammation.

Why Your Skin Behaves Differently During The Monsoon

Although the air feels moist during the rainy season, it’s not always hydrating. In fact, excessive humidity can cause the sebaceous glands to go into overdrive, producing more sebum, which can clog pores and lead to breakouts. Skin folds, the neck and the back are especially prone to fungal infections this time of the year. For those with dry skin, fluctuating humidity levels can also result in flare-ups and increased sensitivity. Dehydration also becomes a hidden enemy as the skin is repeatedly wetted and dried, disrupting its natural moisture barrier.

Smart Monsoon Skincare Shifts

Switch To Lightweight Hydration

Ditch heavy creams and opt for lightweight, gel-based moisturisers. They provide adequate hydration without clogging pores or making your skin feel greasy.

Gentle, Daily Cleansing

Wash your face twice a day with a gentle, pH￾balanced cleanser. This removes dirt, excess oil, and pollutants without stripping your skin of its natural oils.

Exfoliate, But Gently

Use a mild exfoliant with ingredients like lactic acid or mandelic acid once a week to slough off dead skin and prevent clogged pores. Avoid over-exfoliating, which can irritate already￾sensitive skin.

Protect Against Fungal Infections

If you’re prone to fungal infections, especially in skin folds or feet, use an antifungal powder or lotion regularly. Keep those areas dry and breathable.

Don’t Skip Sunscreen

Yes, even on cloudy days. Apply a broad-spectrum, non￾comedogenic sunscreen daily to protect your skin from UVA/ UVB damage.

Season Fresh

Seasonal skincare doesn’t mean replacing everything on your shelf — it’s about making thoughtful substitutions. Pay attention to what your skin is telling you and adapt your regimen accordingly. And if skin issues persist, don’t hesitate to consult a dermatologist. With just a little proactive care, your skin can stay clear, healthy and radiant, no matter what the skies have in store.
