Excerpts from the interview…
15 years of Babita M is a significant milestone. When you look back at the journey from working out of a rented garage in Santacruz, Mumbai, to building a global label, what moments stand out as defining turning points for you?

When I started out, I was driven purely by instinct and passion. Working out of a rented garage in Santacruz meant learning everything hands-on, from fabric sourcing to understanding my client. One defining moment was realising that women were returning not just for silhouettes, but for the ease and individuality my clothes gave them. Showing collections internationally and being recognised for a distinct point of view reinforced my belief that fashion rooted in emotion and wearability can travel far beyond geography.

Growing up in a family rooted in textile exports gave you early exposure to fabric and craftsmanship. How did you find your way into fashion, and how did these influences shape your design philosophy and entrepreneurial mindset?

My journey into fashion was very organic. I did not have formal training, but I grew up surrounded by textiles, fabrics, and the language of production. That exposure became my education. I was always creatively inclined and deeply observant of people, cultures, and how women actually dress. Fashion became a natural extension of that curiosity. Learning on the job taught me discipline and respect for craft, while instinct guided my design voice. I believe that hands-on experience and lived inspiration can be just as powerful as formal schooling.

Your label is known for balancing Indian sensibilities with a global, contemporary aesthetic. How did you consciously develop this design language, and why has it remained central to Babita M over the years?

My design language comes from travel, culture, and real women. Indian craftsmanship and sensibility are always at the core, but interpreted through a modern, global lens. I gravitate towards clean lines, fluid silhouettes, and fusion elements that feel effortless rather than overt. Over the years, this balance has remained central because it allows the clothes to feel timeless yet relevant. It reflects my own journey and the evolving lifestyles of the women who wear Babita M.

Collections like Metalmorphosis and Urban Nomad showcased a bold, experimental side, while your brand is also known for elegant, wearable resort and ready to wear. How do you balance creative evolution with consistency?

I enjoy working in small, thoughtful capsule collections shaped by season, mood, and inspiration. This keeps the label dynamic and prevents it from feeling stagnant or repetitive for our clients. Each capsule allows me to explore a fresh idea while still holding on to our signature fusion contemporary aesthetic. Wearability is always key. Even when I experiment, the clothes must feel intuitive and comfortable. That balance between exploration and familiarity is what keeps the brand evolving yet recognisable.

You have dressed recognisable names in Indian cinema and worked on international projects such as designing jackets for the ICC Champions Trophy-winning team. How have these moments influenced the brand’s credibility and reach?

These experiences added a strong layer of credibility to the brand. They helped position Babita M as a label that could seamlessly move between couture sensibility, contemporary wear, and international collaborations. More than visibility, they brought validation that our design language could adapt to different platforms while staying true to its essence.
Every long creative journey comes with challenges. What were some of the toughest moments you faced, and what helped you stay resilient and committed to your vision?

Like any long journey, there were moments of uncertainty, creative fatigue, and the pressure of constantly reinventing without losing identity. The fashion industry is demanding, especially when you choose to grow organically. What kept me grounded was my connection to my work and my clients. I have always believed in evolving quietly, staying honest, and letting the work speak for itself.

As you look ahead, how do you see Babita M evolving in its next phase, both creatively and globally, and what does success mean to you today after 15 years?

The next phase is about mindful growth. I see Babita M continuing to evolve through capsule collections, expanding its global presence, and strengthening its signature fusion contemporary identity. Success today is not about scale alone. It is about staying relevant, connected, and true to my design language while building a legacy that feels authentic and enduring.
