Excerpts from the interview…

Global influences have led to some fascinating creations in the Indian fashion space. How have these influences or trends impacted the bridal space in particular?

A shift towards minimalism:

Traditionally, Indian bridal fashion has been synonymous with grandeur and opulence. Heavy zari work, voluminous lehengas and rich textiles have been the hallmark of bridal attire. However, there has been a gradual shift toward minimalism. Brides today are embracing sleeker silhouettes, lighter fabrics and understated embellishments, aligning with the global preference for timeless and effortless style. For instance, Scandinavian minimalism has influenced the design ethos, where subtle embroidery on pastel fabrics creates an understated yet elegant look. While the essence of tradition remains intact, this integration of global aesthetics caters to brides seeking elegance without being weighed down by heavily ornate garments.

Fusion of fabrics and textures:

One of the most exciting global influences on Indian bridal wear is the mix of fabrics and textures. Designers are now combining Indian textiles like Banarasi silk, Kanjeevaram and Chanderi with Western materials such as tulle, satin and organza. This interplay results in ensembles that are not only visually stunning but also cater to a wider range of preferences and comfort levels. We’ve experimented with blending raw silk with flowing organza or adding crystal beadwork inspired by European evening wear to our traditional embroidery. This fusion creates a harmonious balance, appealing to brides who want a modern touch while honouring their heritage.

The rise of destination weddings:

Destination weddings, often held in exotic locations, have played a crucial role in influencing bridal fashion. A beach wedding in Bali or a ceremony in Tuscany demands attire that blends seamlessly with the surroundings. As a result, Indian bridal wear has adapted to include lightweight fabrics, breathable designs, and even detachable elements for ease and versatility. Global destination weddings have also introduced Indian brides to Western traditions such as flowing veils and white bridal gowns. Many brides are now choosing ivory or champagne hues for pre-wedding events, fusing Western bridal elegance with Indian craftsmanship.

The global palette in Indian bridal wear:

While traditional Indian bridal colours like red, maroon and gold remain popular, global trends have expanded the colour palette significantly. Shades like lavender, powder blue and emerald green — often inspired by European haute couture — are making their way into bridal collections. Pantone’s Colour of the Year has also had an impact, influencing many designers to incorporate seasonal shades into their bridal lines. This trend allows brides to experiment with hues that align with their personal style while maintaining the essence of Indian bridal wear. It’s a celebration of individuality, something we’ve embraced by offering a wide range of contemporary shades.

Incorporating Western silhouettes:

The influence of global fashion is perhaps most evident in the adoption of Western silhouettes. Mermaid cuts, cape blouses, corset-style tops and pre-draped sarees are now staples in many bridal collections. These elements lend a contemporary edge to Indian outfits, allowing brides to make a fashion statement while staying true to their roots. For instance, cape lehengas and saree gowns have gained immense popularity for cocktail parties and receptions, offering a perfect blend of Indian craftsmanship and Western design sensibilities.

Cultural crossovers and inclusivity:

Brides from diverse backgrounds, including non-Indian brides marrying into Indian families, are opting for fusion ensembles. This has led to the creation of designs that are both culturally inclusive and fashion￾forward. An example of this is the incorporation of Western bridal elements, such as lace details and cathedral veils, into traditional Indian attire. These touches resonate with brides from mixed cultural backgrounds, ensuring that every piece tells a unique story.

Technology and the global stage:

With social media and e-commerce bridging the gap between countries, Indian bridal fashion is now a global phenomenon. Platforms like Instagram, Pinterest, and bridal blogs have made it easier for brides worldwide to access and incorporate Indian bridal elements into their weddings. This global reach has also led to an exchange of ideas and trends. Indian designers are now showcasing their collections at international fashion weeks, and global brands are collaborating with Indian artisans to create hybrid designs. The result is a beautiful amalgamation of East and West, showcasing the best of both worlds.
