How Ralph Lauren Created a Global Lifestyle Brand That Transformed Fashion Forever

Ralph Lauren, the visionary behind one of the world’s most iconic lifestyle brands, redefined fashion, culture and aspiration — and in the process lived the very dream he set out to inspire.

Ralph Lauren was born Ralph Lifshitz on October 14, 1939, in the Bronx, New York City, to immigrant parents. Growing up in a working-class Jewish household, Lauren’s early life had little to do with the world of polished fashion he would later define. Yet even then, he showed an unmistakable entrepreneurial spark. After high school, he worked in sales during the day and took night classes in business, learning early lessons in discipline and hustle.

Lauren’s first foray into fashion came while working for a tie company. Dissatisfied with conventional designs, he began creating his own neckwear — wider, bolder, and unmistakable in character. In 1967, he leapt into entrepreneurship, launching his line of neckties under the name Polo, a brand name that would soon become synonymous with an aspirational lifestyle.

Birth Of A Lifestyle Brand

From the outset, Lauren’s work was never just about clothing; it was about a way of life. As he famously put it, “What I do is about living the best life you can and enjoying the fullness of the life around you — from what you wear, to the way you live, to the way you love.”

This philosophy guided the evolution of his brand. In 1968, he launched his first menswear line featuring classic tweed suits. By 1971, he expanded into womenswear, blending classic tailoring with a feminine sensibility. His vision truly took flight in 1972 with the introduction of the mesh sport shirt — recognisable for its rich palette of colours and the emblematic polo player logo.

Lauren’s aesthetic — a fusion of English aristocratic elements and relaxed American sophistication — resonated widely. When he was chosen to design costumes for the 1974 film adaptation of ‘The Great Gatsby’, his clothing became emblematic of a bygone era, capturing both nostalgia and aspiration.

Innovation, Expansion & Global Reach

As his brand grew in renown, Lauren expanded beyond apparel. By the early 1980s, Polo Ralph Lauren had branched into home accessories — including pillows, throws, bedding, furniture, and even paint — transforming commerce into a holistic lifestyle experience.

Lauren was among the first to recognise that a brand could be more than products — it could be an immersive world. This early insight helped his company pioneer lifestyle branding, an approach that would shape how fashion is marketed and experienced globally. Today, Ralph Lauren Corporation oversees a wide portfolio of products, from apparel, fragrances, and accessories to children’s wear and home furnishings, all tied together by an enduring vision of timeless style.

Pieces from his collections drew inspiration from varied sources — from Southwestern motifs to safari influences — but always stayed rooted in classic American aesthetics. As Ralph himself believed, “I’m interested in longevity, timelessness, style — not fashion.”

Under his creative direction, Polo Ralph Lauren became one of the most widely recognised fashion houses worldwide, with a presence in luxury markets, international retail locations, and a loyal global customer base.

Challenges On The Path To Success

No success story is without its challenges. In 1987, Ralph Lauren underwent surgery to remove a benign brain tumor — a moment that tested both his resilience and his dedication to his work. Despite such personal trials, he continued to expand his business, stepping down as CEO in 2015 but remaining deeply involved as Executive Chairman and Chief Creative Officer.

His brand also weathered fashion industry criticism, with some detractors dismissing his work as derivative or overly commercial. But Lauren’s response was never defensive; he stayed true to his ethos of aspiration and authenticity, building a lifestyle that outlasted fleeting trends. This steadfastness not only reaffirmed his brand’s identity but also helped solidify its cross-generational appeal.

Accolades, Honours & Philanthropy

Lauren’s impact on fashion and culture has been widely recognised. Among his numerous honours are Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) awards, including Lifetime Achievement and multiple Designer of the Year accolades. He received France’s Legion of Honour in 2010 and the James Smithson Bicentennial Medal in 2014. In 2019, he became the first American fashion designer to be named an Honorary Knight Commander of the British Empire (KBE), and in 2025 he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honour in the United States.

Beyond fashion, Lauren’s philanthropic efforts include the Polo Ralph Lauren Foundation, established in 2001 to support cancer-research initiatives and literacy programs. He also co-founded the Nina Hyde Center for Breast Cancer Research in 1989, and has supported numerous other health and community causes.

Legacy & The Next Generation

Lauren’s personal life has been as grounded as his professional one. In 1964, he married Ricky Ann Loew-Beer, and together they have three children: Andrew, David and Dylan. Each child has carved their own path while contributing to the family legacy in unique ways.

David Lauren serves as Senior Vice President of Advertising, Marketing, and Corporate Commerce at Ralph Lauren Corporation, playing a key role in the brand’s storytelling, innovation, and digital initiatives. He is married to Lauren Bush, granddaughter of former US President George H W Bush, extending the family’s cultural reach and influence.

Dylan Lauren is a successful entrepreneur in her own right, known for founding Dylan’s Candy Bar — a boutique candy shop empire that celebrates creativity and imagination.

Andrew Lauren has pursued a career in the arts, working as a filmmaker and producer.

The Lauren family remains close, embodying the blend of tradition and innovation that Ralph championed throughout his life.

A Vision Beyond Fashion

What defines Lauren is not merely his designs, but the enduring narrative he created around them — one that speaks to dreams, refinement, and the power of aspiration. His work transcended apparel, touching culture itself. “What I do has always come from the way people live — all kinds of people, he once said, emphasising that his vision was never about exclusivity but about connecting with a broad and evolving world.

Today, Lauren stands as a testament to the idea that fashion can be a mirror of society, a vessel of optimism, and a driver of cultural imagination. From humble beginnings in the Bronx to the pinnacles of global influence, his story remains a quintessential American success — rooted in bold vision, enduring style, and an unwavering belief in the dream of living life to its fullest.
