Earth, Finally, For Sunita Williams
After spending over nine months aboard the International Space Station (ISS), astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore have safely returned to Earth. Their journey home commenced on March 18, 2025, at 10:35 AM IST, when they undocked from the ISS aboard SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft. Following a 17-hour trip, they successfully splashed down off the coast of Florida at approximately 3:27 AM IST on March 19, 2025. Williams and Wilmore’s extended mission began in June of the previous year. They had embarked on what was intended to be a brief test flight of Boeing’s Starliner on its first crewed mission. However, propulsion system issues rendered the spacecraft unfit for the return journey, leading to an unplanned nine-month stay aboard the ISS. The news of Williams’ safe return has sparked celebrations in Jhulasan village, located in Gujarat’s Mehsana district — the ancestral home of her father, Deepak Pandya, in India. Villagers who had been offering special prayers for her well-being and had lit an Akhand Jyot (eternal flame) at the local temple of Goddess Dola Mata, are rejoicing in the success of homecoming.
