Pope Leo XIV’s oath-taking in May 2025 was witnessed by hundreds of world leaders and royalty, setting the stage for a powerful first Sunday address in which the US-born pontiff appealed for global peace — specifically referencing the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine, and welcoming the ceasefire between India and Pakistan. “I am pleased by the announcement of the ceasefire between India and Pakistan, and I hope that through the forthcoming negotiations, a lasting agreement will soon be reached,” he said. “I carry in my heart the sufferings of the beloved Ukrainian people,” he added, urging for an “authentic, just and lasting peace as soon as possible.” Regarding the ongoing conflict in Gaza, he expressed, “I am deeply saddened by what is happening in the Gaza Strip. Cease fire immediately! Let humanitarian aid be provided to the exhausted civilian population, and let all hostages be freed.
