The Global Citizen Festival is an annual music festival which was started in 2012 with its main aim to end global poverty.
The festival marked its 10th anniversary on September 24, 2022. For the first time ever, the event was held in two places this year. One in New York City, USA and the other in Accra, Ghana. Ghana was chosen as its second location to celebrate the country’s 65th anniversary of independence.
It was reportedly announced that they have collated US$2.4 billion to end extreme poverty; US$1.6 billion to fight AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis; US$800 million to empower girls, defeat poverty, defend the planet, promote health, protect civic space and mitigate the global food crisis.
In addition to this, they also announced that five more companies have signed on to the UN-led Race to Zero initiative to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
This event was hosted by Priyanka Chopra who is a global citizen ambassador. Artistes who performed at Central Park included Charlie Puth, Metallica, The Jonas Brothers, Mariah Carey, Mickey Guyton, Big Time Rush, Maneskin, Little Amal, Rosalia, Angelique Kidjo among others. American R&b artist SZA performed in Accra, Ghana.
