It truly is a glorious time for women in sport. Late last week, Polish prodigy Iga Swiatek took home the trophy for the final Grand Slam of the year – the US Open at Flushing Meadows, New York.
In doing so, Swiatek chalks up her Grand Slam steals to an entirety of 3 after winning the 2020 and 2022 French Open.
Swiatek is an inspiration for young girls and women everywhere by becoming the first woman to win 7 titles in just a single year! The last time such a feat was achieved was in 2014 by none other than the legendary Serena Williams. Now considered to be World No. 1, Swiatek matches Williams’ record after she claimed her 10th straight finals victory. As previously mentioned, since she has already won a Grand Slam title this year, the US Open win makes it her second, making Swiatek the first woman to snag two grand slam titles in the same season since Angelique Kerber won the Australian and US Open in 2016.
Swiatek played the match against Ons Jabeur of Tunisia. The 28-year-old has seemingly also made history by becoming the first Arab-African woman to reach a US Open final. She has now been granted the title of World No. 2 and is the highest-ranked African-Arab tennis player in WTA and ATP rankings history – no small feat whatsoever.
