As NVIDIA propels the artificial intelligence revolution, its co-founder and CEO Jensen Huang has emerged as one of the world’s most influential business leaders, transforming a niche graphics company into the engine powering the future of computing.

Whether unveiling NVIDIA’s latest breakthroughs at COMPUTEX, speaking about the future of artificial intelligence or championing safer AI development, the Taiwanese￾American entrepreneur has become one of the defining voices of the digital age.

In recent months, Huang has continued to shape the global AI conversation, joining more than 35 technology companies — including Microsoft, IBM and Cisco — to support the Open Secure AI Alliance, an initiative promoting safer and more secure AI development as AI systems become increasingly powerful. For Huang, the future of artificial intelligence is not only about innovation, but also about responsibility.

A Journey Forged Through Adversity

Born in Tainan, Taiwan, in 1963, Huang’s early life was far removed from Silicon Valley’s gleaming campuses. His family moved to Thailand before eventually immigrating to the United States.

At the age of nine, Huang and his older brother were sent to Kentucky to live with relatives while their parents completed the immigration process. Through an unfortunate misunderstanding, they were enrolled at the Oneida Baptist Institute, believed to be a prestigious boarding school but, in reality, a reform school. Huang spent his days cleaning toilets, endured relentless bullying and experienced racial discrimination.

Rather than allowing those experiences to define him, they forged the determination and mental toughness that would become one of his greatest strengths.

Once reunited with his parents, the family settled in Oregon, where Huang excelled academically. He graduated in electrical engineering from Oregon State University in 1984, where he met fellow engineering student Lori Mills, whom he would later marry. He later earned a master’s degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University while building his career in Silicon Valley.

Building NVIDIA From The Ground Up

Before founding NVIDIA, Huang worked at Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and later at LSI Logic, where he gained invaluable experience in semiconductor design and business leadership.

In 1993, together with Chris Malachowsky and Curtis Priem, he founded NVIDIA with just US$40,000 in initial capital. Their ambition was bold: To build graphics processors that would redefine computer gaming.

The early years were challenging. NVIDIA struggled financially, several early products failed and the company was forced to rethink its strategy. Rather than abandoning their vision, Huang and his team refined it, emerging stronger with every setback.

That perseverance paid off. NVIDIA went public in 1999 and steadily expanded beyond gaming into fields such as scientific computing, autonomous vehicles and artificial intelligence. When the company’s stock first crossed US$100 a share, Huang marked the milestone by getting the NVIDIA logo tattooed on his shoulder — a rare reminder of how personally invested he remains in the company he co-founded.

Seeing Tomorrow Before Everyone Else

What distinguishes Huang is not simply his engineering expertise, but his ability to anticipate where technology is heading. While NVIDIA initially built GPUs for video games, Huang recognised that these processors possessed far greater potential. Unlike conventional computer processors, GPUs could perform thousands of calculations simultaneously, making them ideally suited to machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Years before AI became a household term, NVIDIA was already investing heavily in emerging computing technologies many considered speculative. Those bold decisions positioned the company perfectly when the AI boom arrived. Today, NVIDIA’s technology powers everything from AI models and cloud computing to scientific research and autonomous machines. In many ways, the AI revolution runs on NVIDIA chips.

His observation that GPU performance was advancing faster than Moore’s Law became so influential that it inspired the term ‘Huang’s Law’, describing the extraordinary pace at which graphics computing continues to evolve.

Despite becoming one of the world’s wealthiest entrepreneurs, Huang remains known for his remarkably hands-on leadership style and his ability to simplify complex ideas. His keynote presentations at NVIDIA’s annual GTC conference are among the most anticipated events in the technology calendar, attracting developers, investors and industry leaders from around the world.

His leadership philosophy is rooted not in perfection but in perseverance. One of his most quoted observations is: “People with very high expectations have very low resilience.” Huang believes setbacks are often a greater teacher than success and encourages entrepreneurs to embrace failure as an essential part of innovation.

That mindset has shaped NVIDIA’s culture. Rather than chasing short-term trends, Huang has consistently invested in technologies that require patience, conviction and a willingness to think years ahead of the market.

His achievements have earned global recognition. ‘Fortune’ named him Businessperson of the Year, ‘Harvard Business Review’ ranked him the world’s best-performing CEO, and ‘Time’ included him among its list of the 100 Most Influential People. More recently, he received the prestigious IEEE Medal of Honor in recognition of his transformative contributions to computing and semiconductor technology.

Person Behind The Pioneer

Known for his signature black leather jackets — many of them by Tom Ford — Huang has cultivated one of the most recognisable personal styles in technology, drawing comparisons with Steve Jobs’ black turtleneck. Interestingly, he has said the look was encouraged by his wife, Lori, who prefers to keep his wardrobe simple and comfortable. What began as a practical choice has since become an enduring part of his identity.

The couple has been married for more than four decades after meeting as engineering students at Oregon State University. They have two children, Madison and Spencer, both of whom have worked at NVIDIA while maintaining a relatively low public profile. Huang has often spoken about the importance of family, loyalty and staying grounded.

Beyond business, Huang has demonstrated an equally strong commitment to philanthropy. Together with Lori, he established the Jen-Hsun and Lori Huang Foundation, which supports education, public health and scientific research. The foundation has contributed generously to institutions including Oregon State University and Stanford University, while also funding initiatives that expand educational opportunities and advance medical research.
