Did Japan just get bigger?!

While Japan has seen the formation of new islands and the disappearance of some due to volcanic activity, it has not officially tallied the number of islands since 1987.

Geographers from the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan studied the land through digital mapping and have tallied it to 14,125 islands. Showing that the number has doubled in the past 35 years.

A more accurate figure of the newfound terrain will be released by the Government after they study it with GSI electronic land map. The findings don’t change the size of Japan’s territory, but is helpful in determining its terrain.
