Shivendra Parihar walks you through a serene hour at THE KUMAON.
Nestled in the tranquil embrace of the Kumaon hills, THE KUMAON is a boutique resort that blends luxury with the region’s natural beauty. Founded by visionary entrepreneur Raghav Priyadarshi, the resort celebrates the essence of Kumaon while offering a serene retreat from the hustle of city life.

A Quiet Escape
Located in Kasar Devi, Almora, a place renowned for its spiritual energy, THE KUMAON enjoys breathtaking views of the Nanda Devi range. Arriving at the resort requires a short walk along a narrow trail, a journey that enhances its secluded charm. This quiet sanctuary, perched high in the Himalayas, merges modern architecture with traditional Kumaoni elements, using local pinewood, stone, and eco-friendly materials.

The resort’s design, by Sri Lankan Zowa Architects, integrates sustainability with elegance. Its standout feature is a rainwater harvesting system that collects and conserves water, ensuring the property remains selfsufficient while minimizing its environmental impact.
Home Away From Home
Upon arrival, I was welcomed with warm smiles and traditional Kumaoni hospitality. Though my stay was brief, it left an indelible impression. The staff’s attentiveness and care made me feel like more than just a guest. The lounge, spa, and library exuded calm, while the dining area — suspended above a valley with glass walls — offered an unmatched view of the majestic Himalayas.

Over light refreshments prepared by Nandan Singh Bisht, a trekking coach at the resort, I savuored the flavours of Kumaon and learnt about the resort’s dedication to preserving local culture. The use of traditional recipes and fresh, locally sourced ingredients reflect a deep respect for the region’s heritage.
Raghav Priyadarshi’s vision for THE KUMAON goes beyond luxury. “The idea was not just to build a hotel, but to create a base for travellers to explore Kumaon’s culture, food, festivals, and stunning traditional architecture,” he explains.
Nearby attractions such as the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary and numerous trekking trails make THE KUMAON a gateway to the Himalayas. For me, as a Kumaoni native, my visit felt like a homecoming — a reconnection with the region’s serene beauty and rich cultural heritage.
Step Into Serenity

THE KUMAON is more than a resort; it’s a sanctuary for those seeking tranquility, luxury, and inspiration amidst nature. For anyone yearning for an unforgettable Himalayan retreat, this hidden gem is an experience not to be missed.
