Samantha Kochharr on Healthy Hair, Heat Styling and Finding the Right Balance

Samantha Kochharr, Managing Director, Blossom Kochhar Group of Companies, shares why healthier hair is all about finding the right balance.

Hair isn’t just about looks; it is woven into your everyday life. There are the rushed mornings when you barely have time to run a brush through it, lazy weekends when you let it do its own thing, and those occasions when you style it with precision before heading out because, quite simply, you want to feel your best. Some days, your hair does exactly what you want. On others, it seems to have a mind of its own. Amid all that fussing, adapting and styling, it is worth asking: are you really caring for your hair, or are you simply trying to keep it under control?

Why We Love Heat Styling

Heat styling can feel like a lifeline. Frizzy hair? Unruly waves? Flyaways everywhere? Out comes the straightener or curling wand, and suddenly everything feels a little more manageable. When the rest of the day feels unpredictable, at least your hair looks polished. And that small boost can make a difference. You look in the mirror and feel just a little more prepared for whatever lies ahead.

But those quick fixes can come at a cost. Over time, you may notice that your ends feel rougher, while your hair loses some of its bounce and shine. The changes are rarely dramatic at first, which makes them easy to overlook. Then, gradually, you realise that your hair doesn’t feel quite the same. “Hair, much like skin, carries memory,” says aromatherapy and skincare expert Blossom Kochhar. “Every time we expose it to excessive heat without protection, we are asking it to give more than it can replenish.” This isn’t about creating fear or guilt around heat styling. It is about becoming more aware of how your hair responds to it.

Letting It Go Natural

Then there are the mornings when you skip the styling tools altogether. You wash your hair, perhaps put it into a loose braid, or simply let it air-dry and do its thing. It may not be perfectly polished, but it is easy. You’re not fighting with your hair; you’re simply allowing it to be itself. Leaving your hair natural doesn’t mean doing nothing for it. It is about being gentle and thoughtful about how you treat it. A soft, messy bun, waves that aren’t perfectly defined or a ponytail that isn’t pulled too tightly can sometimes become your favourite looks precisely because they feel effortless. Confidence can be quiet, too. It isn’t always about fixing; sometimes, it is about accepting.

It Doesn’t Have To Be All Or Nothing

You don’t have to choose one approach and stick to it forever. Most people aren’t going to give up heat styling completely, and that’s perfectly fine. Styling is part of how we express ourselves and how we choose to look and feel on certain days.

The key is to use heat more mindfully. Reach for your styling tools a little less often rather than automatically making them part of your routine. On some days, give your hair a break and experiment with styles that require less manipulation. And when you do use heat, lower the temperature where possible, apply a heat protectant and take your time. Over time, those small changes can make a noticeable difference – not only to how your hair looks, but to how it feels.

Making Hair Care Personal

Hair care starts to feel different when you stop treating it as an annoying chore. A scalp massage, a nourishing oil treatment or simply taking a few extra minutes to gently detangle your hair can become small, mindful acts of self-care. “True beauty rituals are never rushed,” says Blossom Kochhar. “When you slow down and listen to your hair, what it needs, how it responds, you begin to build a relationship with it.” That idea can stay with you. Once you start paying attention, you begin to understand what makes your hair feel healthier and what leaves it feeling stressed or depleted.

More Than Just Styling

Sometimes, you style your hair because you want a sense of control. You want everything neat and just right. At other times, you let a few flyaways show or embrace your natural waves, and that can feel just as good. Both are perfectly valid. Both are ways of expressing yourself. The important thing is to make a conscious choice rather than simply repeating the same routine out of habit. Your hair doesn’t always need to be controlled, nor does it always need to be left completely natural. There is room for both.
