Mika Singh is one of India’s most celebrated playback singers, renowned for his powerful voice, electrifying stage presence, and a remarkable ability to deliver chart-topping hits. Over a career spanning more than two decades, he has become one of the defining voices of Bollywood and Punjabi music, with blockbuster songs including ‘Mauja Hi Mauja’, ‘Bas Ek Kinng’, ‘Dhinka Chika’, ‘Subha Hone Na De’, ‘Jumme Ki Raat’, ‘Aankh Marey’, ‘Pungi, Ganpat’, and ‘Dil Mein Baji Guitar’. His music has become synonymous with celebration, making him one of the industry’s most successful live performers and recording artistes.

Born as Amrik Singh, Mika comes from a deeply musical family. He is the younger brother of legendary singer Daler Mehndi, whose influence helped shape his early musical journey. Raised in a household rooted in devotional and Punjabi music traditions, Mika developed his passion for singing from a young age before carving out his own unique identity in the industry. While inspired by his family’s rich musical legacy, he built a distinct career defined by his energetic style, versatility, and mass appeal.

Today, Mika Singh is not only a celebrated playback singer but also a composer, songwriter, television personality, and global live entertainer, with a fan base that spans generations across the world.

Excerpts from the interview:

From a young boy with big dreams to becoming one of India’s most celebrated performers — what would you say was the defining turning point that transformed your career?

Every phase of my journey has been a learning experience, but I believe the biggest turning point was when people started accepting me not just as a singer, but as an entertainer. Songs like ‘Sawan Mein Lag Gayi Aag’, ‘Mauja Hi Mauja’, ‘Bas Ek Kinng’ and many others gave me recognition, but it was the love of the audience during live performances that truly transformed my career. I’ve always believed that success doesn’t happen overnight — it comes from consistency, hard work, and the courage to be different.

You come from a family with an extraordinary musical legacy. How has your upbringing shaped your work ethic, artistic vision, and the person you’ve become beyond the spotlight?

I was fortunate to be born into a family where music wasn’t just a profession — it was a way of life. Watching my father and my elder brother, Daler Paaji, dedicate themselves to music taught me discipline, humility, and respect for the art. Those values remain with me every single day. Fame comes and goes, but the lessons your family gives you stay forever.

Despite decades of fame and success, what personal values or principles have remained non-negotiable throughout your life?

Respect, loyalty, honesty, and gratitude. I never forget the people who believed in me when I was struggling. I also believe in treating everyone equally, whether they’re a fan, a musician, or someone working behind the scenes. Success is meaningful only when you remain grounded.

Your music seamlessly blends the soul of Punjabi folk with the scale and appeal of Bollywood. How do you stay true to your roots while continuously reinventing yourself for new generations of listeners?

Punjabi music has incredible energy and emotion. I always keep that soul alive in my songs. At the same time, I enjoy experimenting with new sounds, technology, and collaborations. Music should evolve, but your identity should never be lost. That’s the balance I always try to maintain.

The music industry has evolved dramatically with the rise of streaming platforms and social media. How has this transformation influenced the way you create music, perform, and connect with your audience?

Today, music reaches every corner of the world within minutes. That’s a beautiful opportunity. Social media allows artistes to interact directly with fans, which wasn’t possible before. But at the end of the day, a good song is still a good song. Technology can help distribute music, but it cannot replace genuine talent and emotion.

Your live performances are renowned for their electrifying energy and audience engagement. What, in your opinion, is the secret to creating an unforgettable concert experience?

I never treat a concert as just another performance. Every audience is different, and I perform with my heart every single time. I want people to sing, dance, laugh, and forget their worries for a few hours. When the audience gives me their energy, I give them even more. That connection cannot be rehearsed — it has to be genuine.

Over the years, you’ve collaborated with some of the biggest composers, actors, and musicians across languages and genres. What do you value most in a creative partnership, and what have these collaborations taught you?

Mutual respect. Every artiste brings something unique to the table. I’ve been fortunate to work with incredible composers, singers, actors, and musicians, and every collaboration has taught me something new. You never stop learning in this profession, no matter how successful you become.

Success has brought with it many milestones. Which of these gives you the greatest sense of achievement?

Yes, success has enabled me to own a 100-acre farmhouse at Damdama Lake, Gurgaon; 99 houses and 10 horses. I have more than 100 super hit songs to my credit and was also the first in Bollywood to buy a Hummer. I never take these blessings for granted, and they inspire me to keep giving my best to my audience.

Beyond music, you’ve made your mark in television, entrepreneurship, philanthropy, and mentoring emerging talent. Which of these roles has brought you the greatest personal satisfaction, and why?

Music will always be my first love, but mentoring young talent gives me immense happiness. I know how difficult the journey can be, and if I can help someone achieve their dream, that’s a blessing. Success becomes more meaningful when you share it with others.

After enjoying sustained success for so many years, what continues to inspire you to challenge yourself creatively instead of relying solely on past achievements?

Every new song is a fresh beginning. I never want to become comfortable. The audience keeps changing, music keeps evolving, and that motivates me to keep learning and experimenting. I believe the day you stop learning is the day you stop growing.

Life in the public eye comes with both admiration and criticism. How have these experiences shaped your perspective on resilience, relationships, and staying grounded?

If you’re in the public eye, criticism is part of the journey. You have to develop thick skin. I focus on constructive criticism and ignore unnecessary negativity. My family, close friends and loyal fans keep me grounded. Their love reminds me why I started this journey.

Indian music today enjoys an unprecedented global presence. What opportunities do you see for Punjabi and Bollywood music on the international stage, and what role do you hope to play in taking it even further?

Punjabi music has become a global language. Whether it’s London, Toronto, Dubai, New York, or Melbourne, people dance to Punjabi beats. Bollywood music is also reaching audiences worldwide. I want to continue representing Indian music on international stages and collaborate with artistes from across the world while proudly carrying our culture with me.

When future generations look back at your journey, what legacy would you like to leave? And finally, what message would you like to share with the readers of ‘Society Achievers’?

I hope people remember me as someone who spread happiness through music and remained true to himself. Awards and success are wonderful, but what truly matters is the love and respect you earn. As a son, brother, and mentor, I want to be remembered as someone who valued family, supported people, and never stopped giving back.

To the readers of ‘Society Achievers’, I would simply say: Dream big, work hard, stay humble, and never let success change your character. Talent may open doors, but your attitude and integrity determine how far you go. Keep believing in yourself, because every great journey begins with one dream.
