Khushal P Sachdeva, Founder & Lead Vastu Expert, Vastu Krippa & Prabhoo Samaksh, tells Andrea CostaBir how to implement easy Vastu solutions in one’s living spaces to enhance life.
Please explain the exact philosophy of Vastu Shastra.
Vastu Shastra is an ancient Indian system of architecture and design. The core philosophy of Vastu Shastra is to create harmony between humans and natural forces by designing spaces that align with the laws of nature.
How does Vastu balance the five elements (earth, water, fire, air, and space) in a home/ office space?
- The solar system and the entire galaxy are held by the element of Space. The centre of the property is called the ‘brahmasthan’, which is responsible for growth and expansion, and it comes under the space element.
- The element Earth gives shape and structure. Earth has a gravitational force and magnetic field. This element provides stability in a structure. The South and the West zones are essential to harness the earth elements.
- The element of Water is essential for the growth of a natural habitat. Keep bore wells, underground water tanks, fountains etc in the North/ NNE/ North East of the property. Water in the right zones implies a good inflow of finances.
- The element of Fire represents enthusiasm, passion and vigour. The South East direction is ruled by agni (fire). Electric equipment, cooking stove and other fire-related activities should be placed in this zone. Avoid having bedrooms here to minimise tension.
- Air is the life-giving element and its zone is North West. The element of air is movement. Keep this zone obstruction-free to allow the air to move.
What are some simple Vastu remedies to improve the energy flow in small apartments where major renovations aren’t possible?
- Windows: Keep the North and East windows of your property open for maximum time, to allow positive energies to flow into your property.
- Gas Stove: Ideally the gas burner should be in the South East/ SSE zone of the property (i.e at the agnisthaan). This enhances financial abundance.
- Declutter: Regularly declutter the home, as a cluttered space blocks positive energy flow.
- Mirrors: Place mirrors in the North or East direction. Avoid placing mirrors in front of the bed or the main door.
- Plants: Place indoor plants, especially in the North, North East or East corners. They bring positive energy and purify the air. Avoid thorny plants like cacti.
- Salt: Keep a bowl of sea salt in corners of rooms or near windows. Salt absorbs negative energy and should be replaced weekly.
- Furniture Arrangement: Keep heavy furniture like sofas and cupboards in the South or West of the apartment, as these are considered to support stability.
- Lighting: Ensure the apartment is well-lit. Ensure that your property is not dark, dingy or dull. Use warm, soothing lights.
- Main Entrance: Install a swastik or shubh labh symbol above the main door frame (inside and outside the house). This helps achieve divine protection and blessings.
- Water Elements: Place a water fountain or an image of flowing water in the North/ NNE/ North East direction to attract wealth, beneficial opportunities and harmony.
How does Vastu impact the emotional and mental well-being of the occupants in a space?
- Sleeping with the head oriented towards the North can have a negative impact on the mood, sleep and health of a person.
- North East is associated with mental clarity and spiritual growth, having an open and clutter-free North East corner can promote peace of mind and reduce mental stress.
- South West is connected with stability and security. A well-balanced South West corner brings emotional strength and stability, fostering healthy relationships.
What influence does Vastu have on selecting and positioning furniture, such as beds, sofas, and work desks, within a room?
- Position beds against a solid wall with the head facing South or East to support restful sleep and overall well-being.
- Place wardrobes and heavy furniture in the South or South West part of the room.
- Orient work desks towards the North or East to enhance productivity and focus, with the user facing these directions for optimal energy flow.
- Choose furniture in light, soothing colors. Avoid or minimize using black, charcoal grey in the property. Avoid red/ maroon/ copper shades in the North and North East zones. Avoid blue and black in the South East zone.
What are some common misconceptions about Vastu Shastra that you would like to clarify for people?
- Myth 1: The most common myth is that it requires extensive renovations or structural changes in a property, when, in fact, many principles can be applied through simple adjustments in furniture placement, and by modifying the colours. There are simple and effective Vastu remedies that can be installed to negate and counterbalance the Vastu doshas.
- Myth 2: Vastu is purely superstition. Vastu Shastra is a science. It is based on the ancient knowledge of energy flow, natural elements, and spatial design, aiming to create harmony in living spaces.
- Myth 3: Vastu only applies to new constructions. Fact is, the principles can also enhance existing homes, offices and factories.
