Carlos Alcaraz Takes on Novak Djokovic, Winning his Second Wimbledon Title

Carlos Alcaraz, the young Spaniard, defeated the all time great Novak Djokovic 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (4) winning his second consecutive Wimbledon title at the Men’s Singles Final at London, UK,  yesterday. This is his fourth grand Slam title overall.

The spectacular match was played in front of a Centre Court crowd and boasted an illustrious attendance with even Kate, the Princess of Wales, who rarely makes public appearances since her cancer diagnosis, coming to watch the finals.

The match was an easy win for Alcaraz, until he faltered at his three match points, eventually serving for an amazing victory at 5-4 in the third set.

This is, however, no first time feat. Alcaraz took the title in a resounding win last year at a five set epic final on the same court and went on to repeat the feat again this year.

At just 21 years of age, Alcaraz is now said to be the most successful tennis player at present – defeating Djokovic who holds the title of greatest of all time with his 25 Grand Slam Titles and otherwise impressive tennis repertoire. By defending his title and winning his fourth, Alcaraz now becomes the sixth man to have won the French Open and Wimbledon back-to-back, surpassing the tally of Majors won by Andy Murray.

About his win, Alcaraz said, “It is a dream for me to win this trophy. Even when I was 11 or 12, I said I wanted to win here and I am living that dream. For me, this is the most beautiful tournament. The most beautiful court. The most beautiful trophy.”

Further, he continued, “It is a huge honour for me to be part of the (group of) players who have achieved Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the same year. I am really glad to be in the same table as Novak (and other) huge champions.”

The seven times Wimbledon champion, Djokovik, took his loss with grace and tipped his hat to the young winner, Alcaraz, in admiration. In a post-match interview, when asked about what he could’ve done better, he answered, “He was a better player, he played every shot better than I did.” Truly showcasing a sportsman’s spirit.

The world now waits with bated breath to see what this young man is set out to accomplish in the future.
